I think we saw almost all of Austin today. We started the day at Mt. Bonnell, which offers panoramic views of the Colorado River (not THE colorado river). Then it was on to see Zilker Park and Barton Springs - a natural spring that averages 68 degrees. We enjoyed the zen of the Umlauf Sculpture Garden. Next we retreated to a.c. and tex-mex at Chuy's (at one of which in Austin a Bush daughter was caught trying to use a fake id years ago).
After re-fueling on very delicious enchildas, we headed downtown to the Texas Capit0l--another example of something huge. It was restored relatively recently and the inside was stunning as were the grounds surrounding it (here you can see the self guided tour info with descriptions of things in the Capitol and around it and here are pictures of all the monuments outside). Then we ventured over to the (other) UT and drove around campus, which is massive but beautiful. The LBJ Library and Museum was interesting, quite informational, and well air-conditioned. We were going to go to a museum on campus to see a moonrock that is on tour around the country - but LBJ's personal moonrock was on display at the museum and saved us a trip.
Secretly I hoped to see the MTV Real World Austin house - although apparently it is now part restaurant and part business.
The day ended with a nice summer meal at John's aunt's house - fish and vegetables and watermelon -- a nice change from mexican food, which we have had for lunch, dinner, and lunch over the past 3 days, respectively. Though I do love and look forward to the chips and salsa in our future.
